Abstract

This study explored daily lived experience of mothers who successfully breastfed their baby at the point of time infant life is not de-pendent on Breastfeeidng anymore.
The purpose was to contribure nurses under-standing of subjective experience of breastfeeding mothers using a phenomenological research methodology.
The sample consisted of 19 mothers at least breastfed their infants over 8 weeks and¢¥ breastfeeding now or recently(within 6 months). Data were collected from July 1 to November 26, 1992 through interviewing.
The research question was "What is the experience of breastfeeding mothers under the condition of other alternative is available?" Response to the non?structured open?ended question was audio?recorded during the inter-view. Data were analyzed using the phenomenological method of Colazzi. The validity was enhanced by confirmation of the analysis by two nursing clinical researchers, master studeut doctoral student of nursing, doctoral student of Korean language and professor of nursing, all knowledgable of phenomenological research.
From the protocols, significant statements about meaning of breastfeeding, positive experience of breastfeeding, negative experience of breast feeding, outcome of breastfeeding experience were organized into formulating meanings which were then grouped into clusters of themes.
1. Mothers perceived meaning of breast feeding as feeling of one body through coup-ling, expression of affection, gift, main sorce of nutrition supply, obligation as parent, nurture, mystery.
2. Mothers experienced breastfeeding positively as awareness of mothering, formation of attachment, feeling of emotional stability, immunization and health promotion, economical benefit.
3. Mothers experienced breastfeeding negatively as physical discomfort, restriction of personal life, anxiety about breast milk quantity and quality, social pressure, physiologic, psychological bad effect, psychological idea of persecution.
4. Mothers perceived outcome of breastfeeding experience reach maturity, love, sense of trust about breast milk, good relationship, facilitation with family.
This study contribute to nurses¢¥ understanding of the lived experience of breastfeeding mothers and suggest that nurse need to pro-vide considerable nursing care to promote breastfeeding practice.
